Finally, you will need technical skills. Technically, as a designer you will be selling your ideas through visualizations and therefore, you should be knowledgeable about the market materials and products that will be used to implement the ideas.
  • You must work smart to earn; in as much as you may have all that passion in playing around with the colors and fabric, earning a living through interior design will need more effort than you may think. First, you will need to attract a clients who you will then work hard to keep to survive in the industry. However, this does not necessarily have to spell failure. With a little more effort, it is possible to get rewarding contracts.
  • Licensure. Getting a license for your interior design practice is important as such can help your clients gain more credibility and trust. Licensure prerequisites may differ from place to place.
  • Building a portfolio; while searching for clients can be such daunting task, having a well-organized portfolio will aid the client convincing process. In fact, many people aremore likely to work with someone who looks well organized and has proof of experience and a portfolio offers just that.
  • Specialization; There exist a wide range of settings that an interior designer can work in both residential and commercial. Specialization will be determined by your own preferences.
  • Branding; Branding yourself is very important as such will determine whether you do business or not. In this industry, you must get your clients excited to venture into your world. Poor posture, lack of passion and even shyness are sure to doom your career.
  • Design flair; In as much as you can enroll yourself in a design school and graduate with the top honors in your class, having that innate talent in design will be very useful. Yes a certificate in interior design will boost your credibility; however, you need more than that to make it on this industry.   You need your own creative to navigate the industry and make yourself competitive.

Working as an interior designer can be quite a hit if you know what the job entails and what it takes to keep your clientele. It can also be an epic fail if you get into the profession for the wrong reasons.
